The Tree of Gold

Where gold comes from and where it goes? This illuminating illustration from
trustablegold shows the basics of gold production, consume, and recycling.

There are of cause more to gold than this illustration shows. I would love to see a dark-side illustration of the negative impacts of i.e gold production, distribution, illegal weapon financing, mercury poisoning. How much CO2 emission does gold yearly represent? How many children are forced to labor in the gold fields of Africa and South-America? How much gold is hidden in Indian temples? And, why the Greek do not sell their 112,5 ton of gold to ease the plight of their poor. One fool can ask more questions than ten sages can answer. Wood on gold

16 norske gullmynter
Dermed blir regnestykket enkelt. 25 000 :1500 = 16,66 = 16 gullmynter.

India, Norway and Gold Prices

Bullion costs less in Norway than in India

Let it be said at once. This is not an exact evaluation. There will always be some “currency irregularities” in Norwegian kroner (NOK) and Indian rupees (INR). This notice is meant to show a couple of interesting features regarding gold prices in India and Norway. (12.12.2016)

Size matters
One gram 24 K gold costs in India INR 2 791 which corresponds to NOK 405 on the currency calculator. A one gram 24 K coin costs NOK 487.
Conclusion: Gold is cheaper in India if you buy small.
However, if you are a big spender and buy gold by the kilo, the price in India is INR 2 791 270, and this price corresponds to NOK 405 013. A one kilo coin 24 k (999.9) costs NOK 326 898 in Norway.
Conclusion: Gold is cheaper in Norway if you buy 1 kilo.

The $30 billion-a-year Silver Gambit

A century-old ritual known as the London Fix ran until 2014. The global reference price for silver was set each day at a meeting with traders at a handful of banks.

Now we know that prices were rigged by the same banks. However, if you are a small time silver investor with a few kilos under the mattress, the fixing did/does not really matter. At the moment silver is artificially dead cheap and will probably function as a small monetary backup when the shit once more hits the fan the next upcoming financial crisis. The London Fixing

Gold for the Taxman

Norway … the country you are punished economically if you are a thrifty person!

If you through honest work have been able to put aside some money for a rainy day, save money in a bank account, no longer are in debt or have down paid your mortgage on your home…. Then you are a stupid person. In the eyes of the Norwegian government you deserve to be punished with wealth tax if you have managed to accumulate more than 1 400 000 NOK (175 000 USD), and not gotten help form a sleazy bank to hide your fortune in Luxembourg. You must pay 0,85 % wealth tax on everything of value above mentioned sum. It is of no importance that you already have paid income tax, sales tax, car tax, interest tax and many other different types of tax on whatever you have managed to put aside
As per 31st December you even have to declare the total amount you have in cash, postal orders, foreign currency, traveler’s cheques, cash cheques etc. which exceeds NOK 3 000 (USD 375).

Wealth Tax for Everbody
Most Norwegians find wealth tax unreasonable because they already have paid tax on their “wealth”. Moreover, they find it very unreasonable to pay wealth tax every year, time and time again, on the their savings. And when people find taxation unreasonable, they try to use every legal (and illegal) trick in the book to avoid paying. There are many legal ways of reducing wealth tax. One of them is investing in Norwegian 1 500 NOK gold coins, 16,96 gram (15,55gram - 1/2 ounce fine gold). The gold coins are legal tender, but the value of the gold is much higher. Close to 5000 NOK. There is a taxation gap of 3500 NOK for each Norwegian gold coin in Norway.

Taxable Gold Collections?
If you don’t wish to pay unreasonable taxes, check out the taxation rules for precious metal coins in the country you live in. You might get a pleasant surprise for your taxable wealth.

The Harry Dent Depression Conspiracy

How I wish I were Harry Dent! With his prophetic insight I could warn the people of the world about THE GREATER DEPRESSION. But alas, I am not Harry Dent! I can’t even predict how much money I will have in my wallet tomorrow.

Investor Harry Dent was dead wrong when prophesized that gold would fall to $ 700 an ounce in 2014. The price of gold at the end of the year was $ 1201 ounce at the end of the year. However, since Mr. Dent had not given up hope that his deep insight still was correct, he again predicted that gold would plummet to $ 700 at the end of 2015. No luck …. the price of gold at the end of that year was $ 1060 an ounce. In December 8th, 2016 the price of gold is $ 1174 an ounce.

Prophets belive
However, economic prophets are no different from other kind of prophets. They sincerely believe in their messages. Mr. Dent is wise to have changed his focus from gold to economic meltdowns. He now preaches that A Greater Depression is coming, and like any sincere prophet he can see the signs of the next economic collapse. However, his insight is limited to only those who provide their email address.
Predicting future depressions is not difficult. They seem to come in eight years cycles, and the last one of any importance was the 2008 near meltdown. However, in order to foresee A Greater Depression, Mr. Dent has to take into consideration many, many unknown factors. For example factors such as USA's enormous debt, economic stagnation and business oriented Mr. Trump.

Something funny in the air?
Anyway, if you feel the fear in the Western World, you should not waste time on the prophecies of Mr. Dent. He was not able to predict the price of gold, so why should he be able to predict the next Greater Depression? You find his prediction adverts on Kitco.com

REAL Gold and Silver?

It is not unusual to see seemingly good offers in the windows of jeweler shops.  You can get “Up to half price” discounts on silver and gold bracelets, rings and almost any kinds of precious metal jewelry. REAL GOLD! Pure silver! is the message. However, the gold is not real gold.

At least not in Norway where the current norm is 14 karat, ie the “gold” is a mixture of 585 parts gold and 415 parts silver, nickel, copper or whatever. 18 karat gold is 750 parts gold and 250 parts something else. Why such huge discounts? Because, the jewelers have priced the scrap gold at least six to ten times the value of pure 999,9 gold.

Not much gold
Anyway, this is your dilemma. If you buy jewelry, you pay for the design and in Norway 25% sales-tax to the government. The precious metal is probable the least expensive part of the grand total you shell out.

Silver is Dead Cheap
However, if you prefer the white metal, silver jewelry, don’t get fooled even if it is REAL SILVER! If you are offered STERLING silver jewelry, the silver is 925 parts out of 1000 parts, ie. almost pure. However, the salesperson has probably omitted a small detail. Silver is dead cheap, 6 NOK per. gram. (U$D 17/ounce 08.12.16).

Look at the Bright Side
Anyway, look at the bright side of gold and silver jewelry, Sometimes the design in itself is worth the money. So, give something beautiful to the one you love. It’s the thought and not the price tag which is important ;-)

Lite gull

No Future for You

0,5 gram gull
I Burkina Faso lever 6 -700 000 mennesker i gullgraver-leirer.

Kvikksølvnivået spesielt høyt i Arktis

Bevisst underrapportering?

Bellona mener

The Solar Silver Meltdown

Solar energy is increasingly popular and the world sees an increase in the use of silver in the production of solar cell panels. The photovoltaic industry need for silver is driven by an increase in global solar installations and which have risen 11 percent.

Increasing demand
Silver demand from the photovoltaic sector has risen to a record high of 83.3 million ounces, an increase from 77.6 million ounces (2 415 ton) in 2015. The growth for Chinese solar panel installations were strong and China’s demand for silver is expected to grow in years to come. Mine production of silver for 2015 was 886,7 million ounces and this means that the photovoltaic industry consumes close to 10 percent of the world-output. A percentage that will increase as demand for green energy grows. Solar Industry report

Inexpensive Silver
The price of silver is still artificially linked to the price of gold and not to the market mechanism of supplies and demand. The next industrial expansions, and the need for conductive metal in solar panels, will surly lead to a real price increase instead of a to-days speculative price fixing by greedy banks.  Read about the upcomming shortnes of supply in The Silver Solar Burnout

Gold and Mercury poisoning .

Gold, gold, gold, sing the dwarves in Terry Pratchett’s books, as they dig the coveted metal out of mines deep underground.

They still do it, that is, not dwarves, but humans do deep down mining. The deepest gold mine is the AngloGold Ashanti Mponeng mine which is 3,7 kilometer deep.
However, 15million poor work as small-scale miners and many of these are eking out a living as Artisanial miners. They use water as a medium for separating small grains of gold from tons of stone, gravel and sand. However, water is not effective enough to get hold of all the gold. A cheap and fast method of extracting gold is the use of mercury. This Hell-sent metal attaches itself to the precious metal, making it easy to separate it from sand and gravel. In Burkina Faso more than 6 - 700,000 people live on gold mining settlements. 200,000 are directly involved in gold mining, producing roughly half a gram of gold a day. I repeat… 0,5 gram a day.

1000 tonnes of poison
Every year, artisanal miners release 1000 tonnes of mercury into the environment! This is 30 – 40 per cent of the world’ mercury pollution and 70 per cent of the glittering metal ends up in water systems. The mercury vapors from the gold extraction impact the environment. You probably already got mercury in your body as it seeps into food chains, the fish and the meat you eat. In other words, for every gram of gold you buy, you probably poison yourself, your family and unborn children.

Less Mercury?
The Artisanal Gold Council is working for the elimination of the use of mercury through education and training of artisanal and small scale gold miners. But no mattter how you look at the problem it is not going to be solved as long mercury is produced and possible to buy by the miners.

The Year of the Rooster 雞

The Rooster is the only bird in the Chinese calendar. This ancient calendar is important for superstitious Chinese who believe that luck and bad luck are in mysterious ways connected to this animal.

The Year of the Rooster began 28 January 2017.
So, if you are a gambler and born a “Rooster”, your lucky numbers will be 5, 7 and 8.

The Lunar Coins
Anyway, the Perth Mint’s Lunar Series II are beautifully minted collector coins and the 2017 coin shows a rooster, a hen, three small chickens, the inscription “Year of the Rooster” and the Chinese character for “Rooster/Cock/Hen/”. The coins are issued as legal tender and the well-known profile of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in her sixties adorn the other side.
The Lunar calendar coins are not investment coins in the sense that you buy the coins for the value of the metal. You buy them for the pleasure of owning them or giving them away as gifts. The Year of the Rooster coin will ever get valuable since the Perth Mint minted 300 000.

The Mint Blog
Nevertheless, the coin is immensely popular and the Mint’s blog reports: The 2017 Year of the Rooster 1oz silver bullion coin from the Australian Lunar Coin Series II has officially sold out at The Perth Mint. Released in September with a maximum worldwide mintage of 300,000, the coin is the 10th consecutive 1oz Lunar silver bullion coin to sell out since the start of the series in 2008.
The retail price over the counter in Oslo is, at the time of writing (22.11.16), NOK 238 or USD 27, which is not unreasonable for this well made silver coin.

The Silver Fix Conspiracy

One of my top ten silver conspiracies is The Silver Fix.

The current spot price on silver is artificial low.
Big banks too big to fail are manipulating the price of silver.
The price of silver is suppressed.
There are no reasons that the price of silver should follow the price of gold.
Daily cloak and dagger silver-fix meetings mean billion dollar profit.

The White Metal Conspiracy
Don’t believe in this conspiracy! Banks got more ways to rip you off than there are sand grains in Sahara. They have more than enough money already, and do not have to sink so low that they have to manipulate the price of precious metals. If the Fed and The European Central bank deem it necessary they can print trillions and call it “Quantitative easing”.

Gold, Guns, Greed and Rat Poison

“ ... The two hired men dug for four months without success: with high pressure hoses they scoured great pits into which the trees collapsed; they turned the clear waters of the forest stream they excavated red with clay and tailings; they winnowed the gravel through meshed boxes; they dissolved the residues in mercury and burned it off; but they produced almost nothing. Then they hit one of the richest deposits ever discovered in Roraima: in one day they extracted 4kg . .” Read this fascinating article about goldmining in Brazil by George Monbiot in The Guardian

The Silver Doctors Gold Conspiracy

One of my top ten gold conspiracies is The Silver Doctors Conspiracy.

The Future sees a meltdown of the US dollar.
The Chinese Central Bank manipulates the price of gold.
The Chinese wishes to have gold to back their currency.
The Chinese wants to buy all the gold they can get hold of.
The Dollar’s fate lies in China’s Hand. Gold is the key to this fate.
The 50 000 dollars scenario, for an ounce of gold, becomes real.

Don’t believe in this conspiracy! The Chinese has better things to do. They know that China needs a Global economy to prosper.

Sceptic, by choice

The Earth is flat and circled by the Sun.
If you were a banker and knew how to make a tremendous profit by buying gold, ask yourself. Why should I lend it to other people? Furthermore, if you were a leading industry analyst who is dead certain that gold will top the 2011 high of $ 1923, ask yourself. Why should you tell? Why should you reveal your knowledge to other people when you could make a tremendous fortune by following your own advice to the letter. Pawn your house, car, wife and children and buy gold, gold, GOLD! Why not? You KNOW for certain that gold will reach new heights.
No, be realistic and consider Groucho Marx’s famous proverb - which I paraphrase:
- I don’t want to borrow money of any bank that will lend people like me money.

Inca Gold and Cortés the Killer

Imagine you believe that all there is, is yours for the taking, if you are able to take it. The thought is not as absurd as you might think, because this is how the 1% super-rich are thinking. They must acquire another million dollar, even if they have already have 10 000 million dollars in currencies, precious metals, art, cars and property.

The Christians used to see GREED as one of the Seven Deadly Sins. The Church preached the doctrine of the seven deadly sins in order to help people stop their inclination towards evil before dire consequences and misdeeds occured. This history article, about Cortez the Killer, is a good example of how personal Greed for gold always seems to be stronger than Sense and Development.

Cortés told the Aztecs that he and his men "suffered from a disease of the heart which is only cured by gold." Pedro de Cieza de León was inspired to sail to Peru after seeing the Inca gold unloaded in Seville. "As long as I live I cannot get it out of my mind," he said. All of which perplexed – and, in the end, disgusted – the native peoples. The half-Inca historian, Waman Poma, portrayed an Indian asking a Spaniard: "Do you actually eat this gold?" And the Spaniard replies: "Yes, we certainly do!" The last of the great Incas, Manco himself, bitterly remarked, "Even if the snows of the Andes turned to gold still they would not be satisfied." Haiti’s Government prefers Gold to Relief!

Reuters is reporting that at least 1000 people have been killed by the hurricane Matthew, and the country is devastated. The United Nations reports that more than one million people need humanitarian help.

The Norwegian government gave 1.2 million US dollars as acute relief help, and USA has already sent 480 tonnes of basic relief goods. More relief will follow from the International Community.
However, and old proverb says: The Gods are only helping those who help themselves. The Haitian rulers can help their own people by selling off the 58 000 troy oz. (1800 kilo) of gold the Haitian Central Bank have bought, with relief money?, afte the earthquake and hurricane hit the country.

Gold for the corrupt
100 million dollars worth of precious metal can do a lot of good for the population, and who cares if superrich gold traders loose money? Gold is a plaything for the rich and good for nothing when you have nothing to eat and dying of Cholera.

Gold is a Harsh Master

The Indian business man could not take his 13 million rupees, or 240 000 US dollar, shirt of gold with him when he died.

Try to  imagine how much good the "Gold Man" could have done for the poor and destitute in his own country. You can't take it with you, and Death is the great equalizer whether you are dressed in rags or gold. The Guardian

The Zen of Terry Pratchett on Gold and Finance

But, in truth, it had not exactly been gold, or even the promise of gold,
but more like the fantasy of gold, the fairy dream that the gold is there,
at the end of the rainbow, and will continue to be there forever.
Provided, naturally, that you don't go and look.
This is known as finance.

Yet another Viking Coin

Vikings are popular motives! A 1 oz. silver Viking Coin, with a color illustration, is made in New Zeeland for the collector.

The Viking is one of the warriors in the History Collection. It is definitly not a bullion coin and consequently of no interest for the bullion, silver investor.
The Viking warrior is dressed in full battle-gear. He stands against an engraved coastal background showing two longships and warriors ready for battle.
The coin looks good and you can buy the colleector item from Kitco. Mintage 5000, face value 2 NZD. The price is a collector’s price - $ 80. Bullion coin collectors can buy four American Eagle coins close to the same amount. Warriors of the World

Scottsdale produserer noe de kaller for The Viking Coins Series.

Kjøp Canadian Maple Leaf sølvmynter i stedet. Da får du valuta for pengene dine.

Silver Shines Nano-Bright

-     The Prepper Diaries
In the Field with Warblogger Wood

Is it safe to park here?, asks Tomboy. She stares worriedly down on the red car. It is blocking only 90 % of the trash-y bikeway outside the sushi bar, Kyoto Delights.

-There are more traffic wardens in this area than cars, I answer laconically and continue with tales of badly tattooed wardens prowling the streets, hunting for unwary prey. The silversmith smiles wryly and disappears faster than the Silver Surfer. She comes just as fast back after having moved the old Ford to a nearby parking lot.

Kyoto Delights has, like many other sushi bars in Oslo, reproductions of Hokusai’s thirty-six views of Mount Fuji, plastic chop-sticks Made in Hong-Kong, fake wasabi and a not so genuine Japanese sushi master behind the counter. You can’t help thinking you are stuck in an alternative universe.

- If I had known what I now know and had the right equipment in my youth, I would have specialized on 3D printing and silver design. Then I would now have been in the forefront with silver sintering, or low temperature joining technique as it is also called, says Tomboy as she thoughtfully contemplates the landscape repro on the wall.
- But as a student I could not afford a very expensive 3D printer, and instead I figured I could specialize on analog drawing and painting. Drawing- and painting materials are so cheap that you can explore the media without ending up living with your parents. Basic knowledge of colors and illustrating are honest knowledge, and you need only a piece of paper and a pencil to draw anywhere, anytime.

The silversmith picks a silver dollar seemingly out of thin air and flips it back and forth between her fingers.  - I hoped I would get famous enough to be independent of grants and greedy art dealers. However, it has not happened… yet.

One of Norway’s most innovative silversmiths is busy reflecting upon the metal she tries to bring to a futuristic level.

Who wants gold?
- Gold might be mightier than the sword, but silver is better to work with when it comes to experimental production and silver designs, Tomboy continues.  - You know that silver is an industrial metal, but the price of this precious metal is artificially linked to the price of gold. It’s just a matter of time before silver will break free of gold. For the time being the price is artificially low by speculative buying and selling. Silver is dead cheap compared to gold. But what is gold good for? The question is rhetoric, but since I have a Canadian Leaf gold coin in my pocket, I feel obliged to point out that a silversmith can buy quite a lot of tax-free silver with an ounce of gold.

Tomboy wrinkles her nose and mumbles something about price manipulations of the metals.  Yes, shop-silver design is expensive… but quality has always been expensive. However, metal-prices were her main reason for specializing in silver. She knew, as a young student, that she never could try out her original ideas having to pay 1300 dollars for an ounce of gold versus paying 20 dollars for an ounce of silver.

Stimulus and response
- I got a small breakthrough when I designed children silver spoons with a heat-sensitive receptor, Tomboy continues. - The receptor activates two tiny lights in the handle, which blinks when the spoon is in the child’s mouth. Most children find the blinking lights funny and want another spoonful of food to activate the blinking lights time and time again.  On the other hand, parents love the spoon because it makes it so much easier to feed the child. A classic example of stimulus and response, Tomboy says a little guilty.

With a death wish and tears in the eyes we devoured a rather strong sea-urchin dish. The only thing missing was a yellow comic-book burst of flame from our mouths. Greedy gulps of Perrier quenched the fire, but not the lingering heat in the deep throat area. I blink away the tears and look wondering at the fierce dish. Not Japanese at all. This is what you get when the sushi cook is Cantonese.

I look at Tomboy, who is still shell-shocked by the spice, and shoot a direct question. – How many silver coins have you been prepping so far?
- So far, I have two Monster boxes. That means 1000 coins. I also own a couple of one kilo coins for future production. Don’t forget that also kilo-coins are sold without value added tax. The coins are cheaper than 1-kilo bars which are sold with sales tax. Don’t ask me why, because silver is silver. When I melt down the coins, nobody will know that I have used tax-free silver in my designer jewelry.
- And you prepp silver because you believe that the price of the metal will skyrocket?
- Yes! It just is a matter of time. The solar panel producers are buying up silver, silver EFT are investing their dollars in the metal, and maybe most important of all:  China is buying tons.

Tales from the Crypt
At this point of the interview the enthusiastic silversmith places different types of small silver items in front of me, and I get an excellent lecture on the history of silver and its many uses. How the metal historically has been refined, coined, hammered and defined as something valuable. And even more important I get to hear about her maybe not so crazy new ideas.

 - I needed help from specialists from different fields to develop a new kind of personal jewelry. I am dating a young graduate from the Department of material Science and Engineering at the University in Oslo. He is working on a master’s degree on energy transfer between different types of materials. In short… if the energy of my heartbeats can be used as a nano-source of energy to charge a tiny battery hidden in, let’s say, the ring on my finger.  Hopefully, the battery will have enough power to light up a micro-led hidden behind a zirkon embedded in the ring. The idea is that more aroused the ring-wearer gets, the led will glow brighter and brighter. The perfect acid test for couples of all ages. The love-ring will show if your partner turns you on.

- Isn’t it risky to be in the forefront of innovation in an old-fashioned and conservative trade as silversmithing, I hesitatingly ask.
- Well, I work with other things than nanotechnology in silver objects, answers Tomboy and tries to bite over the leatherish squid which should have been the tenth dish.
Tomboy pushes a man-sized polished silver-ring across the table. - Try it on! Think about something that makes your heart beat harder. I am convinced that you, as a writer, have fantasy enough to make it shine. The young woman smiles bashfully and picks up a piece of glossy red sushi, dips it in soy sauce showing a green neon glow of too much wasabi.

The Future is Bright
The silversmith has a special affinity to rings, especially combination rings with patterns. - My boyfriend and I are working on attuning the rings to different types of heartbeats. You wouldn’t want the ring to light up during a business meeting if you need to hold your cards close to your chest. In short… take the ring off your finger if you don’t want anybody to… see the light?
- So, the future is full of opportunities?, I ask.
- Definitely! I will continue to experiment with silver and new technologies as I acquire more knowledge about silver sintering. Markets for innovative silver products are ready to explode and it’s just a matter of time before silver gets really expensive. And when that happens, I will have a nice collection of silver coins hidden safely away, the skilled and future sighted young woman adds optimistic: - Anyway, there are always opportunities for people with knowhow and the will to do something new and exiting!

Sultne Tigre – Sultne Banker

Sultne Tigre

Gold gets dug out of the ground in Africa, or someplace. Then we melt it down, dig another hole, bury it again and pay people to stand around guarding it. It has no utility. Anyone watching from Mars would be scratching their head.

Uansett, for den som skulle gidde å lese mer om hva gammeldags gullgraving i Etiopia innebærer så kan denne ni-siders case study rapporten i: Journal of Earth Sciences and Geotechnical Engineering, vol. 6, no.1-Participation on Traditional Gold Mining and Its Impact on Natural Resources, være av interesse. http://www.scienpress.com/Upload/GEO/Vol%206_1_6.pdf

Not so! Divine Gold – Divine Love

If you happen to visit a Catholic church, you will see that Gold is closely associated with the Divine. Saints, prophets, angles and cherubs and all covered in shining gold. Many of the statues are looking longingly towards heaven. It is difficult, if not possible for someone not versed in biblical lore to understand the symbolism presented in the many statues. Anyhow, if you browse the Internet you will find many contra dictionary answers to the excessive use of gold, but one interpretation might be: Gold represents God’s love, because His love is more valuable than all the gold in the world. Love is God’s gold!

Twin metals and Twin Fortunes

Two important metals have followed humankind from the dawn of time. Books have been written about the historic importance of silver and gold. Religious icons of silver have adorned churches and temples. Statues of gold have frowned down upon worshipping dancing crowds. Gold rules and silver is the Devil’s metal.

An old proverb says; - No country will survive long without gold in its coffers, vaults or central bank strongholds. Most modern countries realize this and hoard the metals for leaner times. Times when paper money is not worth the ink it is printed on.

The European Central Bank knows this is going to happen and forces membership countries to hang on to their gold. Even heavily indebted Greece is not allowed to sell its 112,5 tons of precious metal to ease the burdens of its people. https://www.ecb.europa.eu/press/pr/date/2014/html/pr140519.en.html

You can get hold of quite a few books on how to invest in gold and silver. You will get quite a few practical pointers and recommendations, but the basic message is; Gold will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no gold. But gold is expensive so you better check out the daily spot price at Kitco: http://www.kitco.com/charts/livegold.html or World Gold Council http://www.gold.org/ Try to find a gold seller and buyer who does not charge a premium out of this world.

Silver is a good investment alternative if you do not have enough money to buy gold. This beautiful metal can be bought as bars and coins. The everyday investor prefers the one troy ounce (31,103gram) American Eagle silver dollar or Canadian Maple Leaf 999.9 silver investment coin. However, the Australian Kangaroo and the Chinese Panda are good alternatives. You probably end up buying all four.

onsdag 31. august 2016

A Metric Panda

You probably know that the Chinese Central Bank has gone metric, and left the French 1 Troy 1 ounce (31, 103 gram) in favor of a metric 30-gram Panda gold coin. In Oslo, you can also buy 1 gram, 3 gram, 8 gram and 15 gram coins, but at a steeper price pr. gram. A 1 gram Panda gold coin will cost you 581 NOK and a 30 gram will cost you 11355 NOK, i.e. 379 NOK a gram.

Some people think that small is beautiful, but since have to shell out 17430 NOK for thirty 1-gram coins you better stick to the big 30-gram coin if you can afford it. (31.08.2016)

Poor man? Rich man's gold!

Where do you stash your gold and silver? If you are poor you will need all your resources to live a decent life and precious metals are not an option. But if you have a decent income and don’t fill your garage with worthless trash from China you can afford to buy a few grams of gold as backup for a rainy day. However, if you are rich, you probably have bought gold already. But where do you stash it? Banks-deposit boxes? Your own vault? Or do you seek a safe haven?

The stash of gold, silver and gems stored in the vaults and safe deposit boxes of Malca-Amit in Singapore has jumped almost 90 percent in the past year as wealthy investors seek a refuge in a world of negative interest rates, stagnating economies and political uncertaint.

Gold Smuggling in Norway

Statistics Norway (SSB) shows that gold for 1500 million NOK (190 million USD) was exported from Norway in 2011 and gold for 1900 million NOK (240 million USD) was exported from Norway in 2012. Quite a lot of gold for a country which does not produce any gold.
The import figures for the precious metal were 9,8 million NOK (1,2 million USD) for 2011 and 26 million NOK (3.3 million USD) for 2012. In other words… Where does the export-gold come from? Certainly, a small amount of the gold is scrap gold, but the head of Customs can not/will not explain where most of the exported gold comes from.
The Riddle The most obvious answer to the riddle is hidden n Norway’s import rules for gold bullion coins. Bullion coins can be imported, without the 25 % sales tax almost all other commodities are subjected to. Furthermore, the established national and international gold companies do not have to register the amount of bullion coins they are importing and selling tax free over the counter.

Gold Fetishism and Armani

The Prepper Diaries
In the field by Warblogger Wood

Sorry that I am late, says Herald as he hurricanic storms into his penthouse studio in Oslo. His German trainee has made coffee and given me the latest Wired, Time, and Die Welt Digital on an iPad Air.

The design studio is so vast that you could use a skateboard to get fast enough around in the L-shaped loft floor high above the fashionista shops at ground zero. A double set of identical Apple iMac with 27” retina 4K screens stand dictatoric on a concrete table in the middle of the room. A mixture of monster-cables, several screens and printers try to dominate the desolate studio.

Yet another designer… Why do I locate designers on the Dark Web who also are preppers? However, no complaints. Serious preppers are notorious secretive and difficult to locate at all, and economic preppers are even more secretive because of the gold and silver they are liable to hoard in the grey-zone of the Norwegian fortune tax and gold coin collecting. Nevertheless, Herald had not been unwilling to meet me when I contacted him - through how many untraceable servers I do not know.

– People need to be warned about the upcoming monetary crisis, he had preached over Skype. - But kindly use a pseudonym, and not my real name when writing about my style of prepping.

I guess his willingness was a subconscious need to be seen by potential customers, an artistic need to show off his design skills and a sub conscious need to spread the gospel of economic gold prepping - the way he does it!

Panda, Panda, wo bist du schön?
The designer explained the different pieces of hardware on his electronic altar and pointed at the scanner. – Many contemporary digital designers do not see the creative potential of an ordinary 2D flatbed scanner, he says and places a small, white umbrella spreading ambient light on the scanner glass. – This morning I was going to place a live snake, a Norwegian Linnormr, straight on the glass. Somehow, I can’t force myself to do it. The Linnormr is going to be a part of a scenario with the Chinese Panda Gold coin as an investment option. A Chinese gold wholesaler have ordered twelve illustrations with motives from the Chinese Zodiac. All twelve illustrations have to have the Panda figure on the gold coins integrated with the Zodiac animals. – As you probably know, the Shanghai Gold Exchange will focus on gold coins as bestsellers to foreign investors. Humm… I better scan the Linnormr in his reptile glass cage, he says thoughtfully as he lights up a cigarette.

Herald is the wiz of gold coin illustrations. The Chinese love him and pay “The Mad Norwegian” handsomely. – The first gold illustration I made was for a Chinese/English gold dealer in London. He was in need of some serious promotion leaflets that would appeal to both rich Chinese tourists and the wealthy British upper-middle class. It was great! The London dealer loved the way I captured the essence of gold as an investment object for an uncertain monetary future. He recommended me to his connections in Shanghai. I had it made.

Stricken by Gold Pandas
Some designers, artists and preppers like to look cool, and Herald looks cool indeed. I’ve known since I entered the studio that this field interview would turn out to be a mixture of computer-lore, gold fetishism, design philosophy and hopefully some insight in gold coin prepping. As Herald reels off his story, he brushes off a speck of dust from his night black Armani jacket and lights up a John Player cigarette with a Dunhill lighter. Old fashioned, but cool. I refrain from lightning one of the Dutch cigarillos I have in my pocket.

Herald lectures me on the development of monetary politics in the Western World. He talks about the enormous amount of money the USA owns the world and the trade deficits of Europe. He laments the loss of industries to Asia, and China’s rise to become a fearful economic contester to the rest of the world.

–We have cut our own throats. The Han Chinese are going to finish us the moment the German Industry Machine no longer can supply them with the best of the best of scientific instruments, supreme quality cars and whole factory complexes.
I nod in agreement. The Chinese are buying technological knowhow whenever they can get hold of it. They bought the Swedish car producer, Volvo, and applied some of the technology in their own car production. They will compete by selling dead cheap low quality cars all over Asia and Africa. Their ultimate goal seems to be economic world dominance with the Yuan as the world’s new reserve currency.

-There is just a matter of time before we see the next major economic earthquake, Herald continues, waving his cigarette in the air. - Eight years have passed since the Leman Brothers brought the US dollar to the brink of extinction. A few weeks ago, Time Magazine presented the statistics of economic meltdowns. The pattern repeats itself every eighth year, and that means that the world is due for another one this year or in the beginning of next year. Like earthquakes, we know that they will happen, but we do not know where and when.

- YES! Yes! I break his monotone with an impatient exclamation. Some of us know, but most of us do not know or care about the state of the world economy.  How do you prep against the economic Doomsday you fear will come?

- Well, as you know I work for the Chinese because they have not forgotten the value of gold. They like my designs and they pay me handsomely in Yuan which I declare as income and pay tax like any other taxpayer. However, since I work with Gold Panda illustrations they give me coins as personal gifts after I deliver whatever they have ordered. The new ultra-rich Chinese like to show off their wealth. Besides, my love of gold and Panda bears amuse them. In their eyes I am a kind of clown.  A party pet. I make them feel superior. But who cares… Gold is gold and I have what you might call a… Gold Panda fetishism. The close shaved face gets an angelic expression.

A Golden Gleam
I’m about to ask Herald to elaborate on how he gets his ideas about Panda gold coins and other currencies when he turns his back to me and carefully pulls up his black silk shirt. A sizable tattoo with the motif of a Panda Gold Coin covers most of his back. A cute panda bear climbs over a bamboo stick in a bamboo forest. The coin is so detailed replicated that one could suspect that the coin motif designer was the hand behind the masterwork. Not so.

-It is beautiful, I exclaim! -Where on earth did you manage to get such a piece? Oslo’s tattoo parlors can not do such designs. How did the tattooist manage to apply the golden gleam to the skin?

- I got the piece in Shanghai this summer. The master illustrators have invented a new technique they call “Nano skin engraving”. This new technique enables them to obtain a level of details never before attained in the history of tattooing. The golden gleam is gold nano particles laser-embedded in the pores of my skin.

- When I showed the tattoo to one of my customers in Shanghai he almost burst into tears of excitement and insisted on showing me off like a price stallion to his business associates of wholesale gold dealers. And… best of all… He promised me a 1 oz. Panda gold coin for each of his guests that turned up at his party. Now, I can’t disclose how many turned up, but let’s say that it was a very profitable evening selling my fetish. I felt like a gigolo… but gold is a harlot whispering in all languages.

- Anyway, let me get down to the prepping. I guess you have noticed the night-black Franz Jäger safe in the corner over there? It is a grade seven Diamond Cut safe. Costs a fortune, but safe as The Bank of Norway and no pun intended. You are going to work extremely hard to crack open that one. Herald grins. OK! First of all you have to hide your gold and silver outside a bank because you want to be able to get to your physical gold if the bank closes its doors in a bank run. Secondly, invest at least 10-15 % of your savings in physical precious metals. Since I am an economic prepper, I invest much more of my earnings in both silver and gold. I prepp Panda Coins because I love them, but the premium is really too much seen from an investment point of view. For preppers without a fetish I recommend Canadian Maple Leaf and American Eagle 1 oz. coins. You will get most bang for the buck buying these coins. Especially the Maple Leaf has many security features.

After a cup of relaxing green tea I get ready to leave his studio. I can’t resist asking him a last question I know the answer of. – If you could choose an illustration to this interview, what would you have chosen?

Gold Panda Coins, he says innocently. I can see that it is a declaration of love.
